Lupinacci Presents Mitchell Award to Cadet 2nd Lieutenant Joanna Gerdvil
Huntington – Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci honored Cadet 2nd Lieutenant Joanna Gerdvil of the Civil Air Patrol’s Leroy R. Grumman Cadet Squadron at the July 16 Town Board meeting for earning the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and achieving the Mitchell Award.
“Cadet 2nd Lieutenant Gerdvil is an inspiration to other young women who aspire to be a part of the Air Force,” said Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci. “Such an accomplishment is not easy, but Joanna has proven that she is a committed member of her squadron.”
The Civil Air Patrol is the Civilian Auxiliary of the U.S Air Force by act of Congress and performs emergency services under FEMA. Gerdvil is a member of the Leroy R. Grumman Cadet Squadron, one of the 6 squadrons on Long Island. The Cadet program trains young men and women, ages 12 to 20, in leadership, aerospace, safety, moral leadership, physical fitness and emergency services.
Cadet 2nd Lieutenant Gerdvil has excelled in this program and has received the Mitchell Award, an honor looked on very highly by all military academies. The Mitchell Award also earns Joanna the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.
The General Billy Mitchell Award is earned by Civil Air Patrol cadets who have successfully completed the second phase of the cadet program. It marks the end of the enlisted phase of the cadet program; cadets are promoted to Cadet Second Lieutenants upon receipt and, by extension, Cadet Officers.
